9 Tips For 9 Months

Every little girl dreams of being a mother one day. It's in our nature to nurture—we dress our dolls, comb their hair, and pretend to feed them. But even with years of "practice," you don't know what you have in for yourself til you see that life-changing pee stick. And it's crazy how much your life changes even before your little baby makes its grand entrance.

So now I bring you 9 tips for 9 months:

1. Make some time for sleep!

I know eeeeveryone says that once the baby is born, you should nap when the baby naps. But let's be serious; that doesn't happen. You'll probably be showering, stuffing you face, and conquering mountains of dishes and laundry when your baby is napping!

2. Don't waste your time reading baby books.

I did this. And I ended up just making myself feel depressed. Everything I was planning to do I found out was "wrong" and then even after my baby was born, I felt like the authors of these books were judging me and yelling at me. Every baby is different and it's better to just learn your own baby as you go along. (If you are really interested in learning information about babies, just look up specific topics online. The info you'll find online is much more concise than a 200+ page book by one single author.)

3. Learn to filter through advice. Because man, oh man, will you receive a plethora of it!

From feeding, bathing, and changing your baby to nursery decor, people think they are a part of your household from the moment you inform them you are expecting! Some advice is good, and some is far from it. But what I've learned is to not argue. I just listen and nod and go home and make my own decisions.

4. Borrow some staple maternity clothing items from a friend.

Maternity clothing can get pricey. And if they are only going to be worn for a short period of time, they aren't worth spending a fortune on! I borrowed a few shirts from a friend and only bought a couple belly bands, a couple pairs of jeans, one pair of leggings, and a couple plain layering shirts!

5. Take a tour of the delivery ward you are going to have your baby in.

I am SOOOO glad I did this. It gave me a sense of being at home and made me feel comfortable when the time came for me to go in.

6. Make time to eat.

Although "eating for two" is a myth, if you're anything like me, you'll struggle to hold anything down. Being pregnant already makes you low on energy and if you aren't eating well, you'll have even less energy! Therefore, if you can hold it down, eat it! (Everything in moderation, of course!) But also, if you can't hold it down, don't fret! You won't be throwing up forever—I promise! Just let it out and avoid taking anti-nausea meds; they aren't worth the risks

7. Drink plenty of water.

It's important to stay hydrated when pregnant. But it's also important to the develop the habit nice and early so it can become second nature when breastfeeding. A woman who doesn't stay hydrated wont produce sufficient breastmilk for her baby! And that'll be the start of a nasty cycle. Carry a water bottle around with you and make sure to drink before you even feel thirsty!

8. DON'T ignore those kegels!

I definitely didn't recognize the importance of these til about a week after my baby was born. And as embarrassing as this is to admit, it is nearly impossible to hold it til you make it to the toilet. Crazy to think that a simple, little, pelvic floor exercise can prevent this embarrassment. Ten of them every hour isn't really THAT hard.

9. Lastly, enjoy every moment!

Document your pregnancy! I took weekly bump pictures and I'm so glad I did! (That's me in the photo above!) Pregnancy comes and goes before it even really sinks in! And when your baby arrives, it'll be nice to look back on the memories of the journey that brought him or her here!

To my husband, the father of my unborn child

To my husband, the father of my unborn child,

I wanted to say thank you. I feel like husbands are often unappreciated when wives are expecting. But there's no way I could have done this without you. I really can't comprehend how unmarried women go through 40 weeks of pregnancy on their own. I'm so thankful that God designed pregnancy to fit so seamlessly together with marriage.

Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for being there for me constantly.
Thank you for giving me a baby.
Thank you for praying for me and with me.
Thank you for praying for our baby.
Thank you for wanting to be a good, godly daddy.
Thank you for being sympathetic when I'm uncomfortable.
Thank you for not expecting too much from me.
Thank you for letting me have lazy days.
Thank you for doing favors for me.
Thank you for helping me with jobs around the house.
Thank you for washing dishes for me.
Thank you for rubbing my back on demand.
Thank you for helping me put on my socks.
Thank you for helping me put on my shoes.
Thank you for picking things up from the ground for me when I don't feel like bending.
Thank you for carrying things for me.
Thank you for helping me get up when I'm stuck on the sofa or on a chair.
Thank you for helping me get out of the car.
Thank you for letting me fulfill my random food cravings.
Thank you for being flexible and eating whatever I can bring myself to cook.
Thank you for being flexible with our schedule.
Thank you for still finding me attractive and always telling me that you do.
Thank you for the extra kisses.
Thank you for the belly rubs.
Thank you for the foot massages.
Thank you for pampering me.
Thank you for being there for me when I feel needy.
Thank you for being the best husband in the entire world.

I love you from the bottom of my heart.
Forever, for always, no matter what.

I can't believe we're literally in the home stretch. Today marks 39 weeks of pregnancy. Seven days left. Just seven. I'm hoping and praying that Baby decides to make his debut sometime within the seven days. I really don't know if I can handle being overdue. Haha! My mom comes in five days, and I think the most ideal would be if baby decides to come right when she does...but I wouldn't mind if he decided to come earlier either. :P

Week 39:
Symptoms: Difficulty sleeping, frequent urination, lower back pain, Braxton Hicks.

How I'm feeling: I'm in a constant state of tiredness!

Cravings: Sweets.

Aversions: "Heavy" foods

Anything To Report?: Nope.

Wedding Ring: On!

38 weeks today! C'mon Baby! We are ready for you! Although my mom would prefer that you wait for her (she comes in 12 days), I definitely wouldn't mind if you decided to come a liiiiittle early. Hehe.

So many of my friends have been having early first babies lately. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous. I'm super uncomfortable and it's getting harder to fight against that all too famous pregnancy waddle. But all the annoyances seem to diminish when I stand in front of our little baby's wardrobe and look at all the adorable clothes he'll soon be wearing! I can't wait!

Week 38:
Symptoms: Difficulty sleeping, frequent urination, lower back pain, Braxton Hicks.

How I'm feeling: I'm in a constant state of tiredness!

Cravings: Feta cheese!

Aversions: "Heavy" foods

Anything To Report?: Nope.

I'm finally full term! I am so ready for Baby to come out! I have another appointment with my midwife on the 27th, but I am  secretly hoping Baby comes before then! It was so weird today because I walked to my Doctor's Surgery and was fine, but on the walk home, my back was KILLING me. Now I'm struggling to move from where I'm sitting on the sofa! Is it gonna be like this for the next 2.5 weeks?!

Baby, please come soon! We are ready for you now—especially since we've now been to an antenatal class and toured the delivery suite at the hospital where you'll be born!

Week 37:
Symptoms: Difficulty sleeping, frequent urination, lower back pain.

How I'm feeling: I'm in a constant state of tiredness! I am so ready for Baby to come out!

Cravings: Feta cheese!

A Waiting Game

Today was Craig's first day back at work after the Christmas holidays. I assumed I'd be productive, but my assumption couldn't have been further off. I've done nothing today. My brain wont focus. I tried to read; that didn't work. I have a whole list of things I need to do around the house; I've done none of them today. Something about this waiting game, waiting for baby to arrive who knows when, is making my brain feel like mush. I am so excited, nervous, and anxious! I want Baby to come early because, let's face it, no woman is comfortable at 36+3, but I also want my mom's wish to come true and Baby to wait til she arrives in England. Thank God I'm not in control of the timing! But, my goodness, how slow this month feels already!

Lord, I pray that You would strengthen me this month. Help me not to be too anxious, but help me to trust in Your perfect timing. I also pray that You would give me a smooth, pain-free labor. I know You have the ability to do that and I ask that You would. Also, please remove all the fear and worry from my mind. Thank You for the blessing of pregnancy and I pray that You would grow me and Craig as we become parents. Help us to raise our child to love and serve You. Amen.

I thought the start of this week would be considered "full term" but I just learned that it's the end of the week! So here's to aaaalmost being full term! My friends keep having first babies [really] early though so I wouldn't mind if my baby decided to come now. They house is clean, the baby bag is packed, and my hospital bag is packed...so I'm as ready as I'll ever be!

Week 36:
Symptoms: Itchy belly, difficulty sleeping, frequent urination, kidney pain, nausea, and believe it or not, morning sickness has returned in full swing! I threw up every day for the past 3 days!

How I'm feeling: My back (by my right kidney) has been killing me! Thank the good Lord for meds!

Cravings: Hot chocolate!

Aversions: "Heavy" foods and sadly, eggs still :(

Anything To Report?: Nope.

I never did take a Week 34 photo. I guess I have Christmas to blame for that! We were in Gloucester with Craig's family for a whole week! It was lots of fun! Now I'm at 35+4 and can't believe there is exactly 1 month til our baby's due date! He'll be here SO SOON!! I'm both nervous and excited but I guess that's normal!

Week 35:
Symptoms: Very itchy belly, itchy arms, itchy legs (are we sensing a pattern here?), difficulty sleeping, frequent urination, and the nausea has returned.

How I'm feeling: My back (by my right kidney) has been hurting again, but apart from that pain, I feel fine!

Cravings: Hot chocolate!

Aversions: "Heavy" foods...and believe it or not, eggs! I never thought I'd ever have an aversion to one of my favorites!

Anything To Report?: Nope.

Currently, I am sitting on the sofa wearing a t-shirt that my belly is hanging out of. It's so awkward how I'm outgrowing most of my clothing at this point. I thought we were doing well here, but clearly I was wrong. These last few weeks, my belly growth has been exponential. (Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But seriously...can I get any bigger?!) I am ready for this baby to come. I am so uncomfortable all the time! Ha! 6 more weeks!

[No photo this week—sorry!]

Week 34:
Symptoms: Very itchy belly, itchy arms, itchy legs (are we sensing a pattern here?), difficulty sleeping, and frequent urination.

How I'm feeling: I think my cold is better now! Thank God it was short lived! So apart from discomfort, I feel fine!

Cravings: I'm not sure actually...haha!

Aversions: "heavy" foods.

Anything To Report?: Nope.

Well, well, well! Every time I am prepared to inform you all that my morning sickness has finally subsided, it starts up all over again! I threw up my breakfast this morning....Hopefully I don't throw up again this week!

On a different note, I had an appointment with my midwife this Tuesday. I can't remember at what point the the appointments became more frequent (every two weeks). She was super stressed out because she had a lot going on that day and she was kind of short with me. Craig met her for the first time this week and I'm afraid she gave him a bad first impression because she was being patronizing. But basically, she clarified that although the midwives who were there two weeks before said I wont have to repeat my blood test til 36 weeks, I actually needed to repeat it this week! She put me in a slight state of panic because she wanted me to repeat it pronto and then come back to see her 2 days before Christmas. We informed her we were going to be out of town for Christmas. So I booked a blood test appointment for the next day and I'm seeing her again next week! Phew! So much going on! I guess this is prepping me for the busyness that comes with having a baby!! Only 49 more days!

Week 33:
Symptoms: Very itchy belly, difficulty sleeping, and frequent urination.

How I'm feeling: The back pain is mostly gone! Praise the Lord! But I caught a cold :(

Cravings: I'm not sure actually...haha!

Aversions: "heavy" foods.

Anything To Report?: Nope.

Wedding Ring: On! I don't think I'm ever gonna swell to the point where my wedding ring wont fit!

Nine weeks left! We are now in the single digits! WHOA! This past week reminded me of week 27, the memorable week where I landed in the hospital. Yesterday, that all too familiar pain returned and even the meds didn't help. I was praying so hard because I didn't want to go to the hospital again—and praise the Lord, I didn't have to. They day was kind of a waste though; I spent most of the day in bed. Today is a new day though! Hello 31 weeks! Tomorrow is my baby shower...can't wait!

Week 31:
Symptoms: Shortness of breath, back pain, swollen feet, difficulty sleeping, tummy aches, random nausea, itchy belly, and morning sickness.

How I'm feeling: I'm alright...

Cravings: I'm not sure actually...haha!

Aversions: "heavy" foods.

Anything To Report?: My baby shower is tomorrow! I'm so excited that I'm mentioning it twice! Haha! :)

I know I say this practically every week, but how in the world does time fly so fast?! I can't believe we are already at week 30!! Only 10 more weeks to go! CRAZY! I've been told that the weeks will start feeling slower as I get closer to being full term. Everyone says it's just a waiting game from there. I don't know if that'll be true for me or not, but the wise words of my cousin were, "...then you just have to start crocheting!" So...I did! Yesterday, I decided to make my baby boy a hat. Last year, I taught myself how to crochet watching YouTube videos so I figured I'd do the same with crocheting a hat. It was a bit harder than I expected. I spent the whooole day trying to figure it out and it came out all wrong and flat like a pancake. I was so disappointed. But I am no quitter, and today, I managed to successfully crochet a hat! Here's the final product!

In case anyone is interested, here is the video I used. The only thing I did differently was I ended it at about 5" instead of 6" like the video said because 5" is the size of the store-bought newborn hats I already have.

Week 30:
Symptoms: Shortness of breath, back pain, swollen feet, difficulty sleeping, tummy aches, random nausea, and morning sickness.

How I'm feeling: Currently okay...although I've been blah a lot this past week.

Cravings: Sweets still! Yesterday, I was soooo desperate for waffles with pumpkin spice syrup! Haha!

Aversions: "heavy" foods.

Anything To Report?: Craig got his paternity leave approved! Woohoo! Also, cankles have arrived...

Pregnancy Log: Week 29 (Revisiting The Past)

It's really crazy. This past week has felt like a repeat of my pregnancy earlier on! I'm revisiting the past! I thought I was alone but several of my friends who are pregnant said the same things about their pregnancies! The closer I get to full term though, the more excited I get! I can't wait to meet our little baby boy! All the annoying symptoms are worth it!

Week 29:
Symptoms: Shortness of breath, back pain, swollen feet, difficulty sleeping, and morning sickness (it's baaaaack!)

How I'm feeling: Eh. It's been a rough week.

Cravings: Believe it or not, sweets! I've been craving chocolate chip cookies for the past week and still haven't fulfilled that craving! Oreos make a good substitution in the meantime, thankfully!

Aversions: "heavy" foods.

Anything To Report?: Nope.

Counting My Blessings

This week has proven to be the most memorable week of pregnancy thus far. Sunday afternoon, I started feeling some lower back pain. I didn't suspect anything because I know random aches and pains are common during pregnancy. But then by the time I went to bed, they had gotten a lot stronger. I took some Tylenol and managed to get about an hour and a half of sleep but then woke up with an unbearable pain. After what felt like only a few brief moments, I was on a stretcher in an ambulance and on my way to the hospital with a suspected kidney infection! The paramedics gave me some Paracetamol, but the pain relief only lasted for about an hour—the drive to the hospital was the best I felt! Before I knew it, I was sitting in the hospital getting pricked and poked, waiting for some answers, and then the pain returned. All I wanted was some relief!

The answer I received was different than what I was expecting. Actually, I don't even know what I was expecting. But after being given some codeine (thank the Lord for strong painkillers!), I was told I'd be admitted into a room and would most likely have to stay overnight. What a day of firsts! I rode in an ambulance for the first time and then I was staying overnight in a hospital for the first time. I was also spending my first night away from Craig since we got married. That was the part I was most sad about.

By the end of the day, I was hoping they'd change their minds and let me go home. After all, I had already had my kidney scan and was told the results were in. All that was needed was a doctor to go over the results with me. But by 7pm, visiting hours were over, Craig had to leave, and no doctor was available. The more I sat there, the more I had time to think, and after a bit of moping over missing my husband, I had a realization that I was blessed. God has been SO good to me. Being in the hospital ward in a room with sections separated by curtains, I was able to hear a lot. It was a humbling experience.

The lady to the left of me was diagnosed with preeclampsia. She was only 34 weeks pregnant but was scheduled for an emergency cesarean on Thursday because her baby was measuring small and wasn't very active. By the time I was discharged on Tuesday, her cesarean had been bumped up and she had already been taken to pre-op. The lady across from me was an even sadder case. She was an epileptic so she had delivered her baby reeeeeally early. The whole day, she was crying because she wanted to be with her baby. The midwives kept telling her she needed to pump her breastmilk so they could feed her baby human milk which is crucial when a baby is as premature as hers. But, of course, when a woman delivers a baby as early as she did, her body won't produce the necessary amount of breastmilk. Because of this, the midwives told her that they'd have to resort to donor milk if she couldn't pump enough. This only made her cry more and more saying things like "I don't want another woman to feed my baby!" in the midst of her sobs.

As I laid there in my bed hearing all these sad stories that surrounded me, I felt out of place. My problems seemed far too minimal compared to the other women. It was then that I began counting my blessings. Blessing #1: Craig. The biggest blessing in my life. The perfect answer to all my prayers. My lover, my best friend, my helpmate. Blessing #2: Baby Walker. A true joy already—even before his arrival! Alive, healthy, active. If I made a exhaustive list of all my blessings, the list would be too long to read! God has truly been good to me.

I was discharged from the hospital at noon yesterday. Rather than the suspected kidney infection, it was only fluid retention in the kidneys caused by the growing uterus pressing on the tube between my bladder and my kidneys. Rather than a foreign infection caused by a bacteria, it was a more minor infection caused by fluids already in my body. I don't fully understand the science behind it, but the doctor explained to me that it was the reason for my extreme pain and placed me on antibiotics to hopefully fix the problem. He also explained to me that this was quite common in pregnancy especially for women my size and gave me a box of the magical pain killers to take home along with my antibiotics. Thank the good Lord for modern medicine!

I am praising God that the problem was so minor. I am so thankful that our baby is fine and doesn't even seem to be phased by this! I am thankful for doctors that know what they are doing and for the medicines they provide. And I am thankful to be back home with my wonderful husband!

This is the last week of the second trimester! I know I've been saying this a lot, but time reeeeally flies! We came home yesterday from having a short holiday in the Lake District with my in-laws. We had a fun time together—so fun that I didn't even take a 26 week belly bump photo. Oh well! I feel like I grew a lot this past week. What do you all think? Can you see the difference from week 25 to week 27?

Week 27:
Symptoms: The shortness of breath is still there...but I realized that it only happens after I eat too much! So I guess I gotta limit my food now! Ha!

How I'm feeling: Tired but excited! Baby boy is responsive to touch now. It's been fun pressing on my belly and feeling him kick back! :P

Cravings: Still omelettes and olives! Ha!

Aversions: The chicken + meat aversions continue...but they aren't as bad as they were.

Anything To Report?: The baby room is FINISHED!

I'm so excited to meet our little baby boy! The more we purchase for him, the more real it all feels. The room is nearly complete. We're waiting one one piece of furniture, which we'll hopefully be able to pick up and assemble today, and our yellow rug. After that, the room will finally be done! We keep walking into the room and sitting on the chair and imagining what our lives will be like in just three short months. Our lives will be completely different. But they will also be a whole new and unimaginable kind of exciting. I CANNOT WAIT!

Week 26:
Symptoms: I think the throwing up is fiiiiinally over with! The shortness of breath is still going on but I just picked up a prescription for more iron tablets...so hopefully that should mellow out too!

How I'm feeling: Excited! We are going to Ikea today to pick up the last piece of furniture for our baby room...and we got our pram yesterday! Everything is progressing and we're so excited to meet our little one in 98 days (give or take)!

Cravings: Still omelettes and olives! Ha!

Aversions: The chicken + meat aversions continue...

Anything To Report?: Nope...

The speed that time flies will never cease to amaze me. I cannot believe our baby will be here within 15 weeks. That seems like the blink of an eye!

This week was a productive one in the Walker home! We did A LOT of work on the baby room. (Doesn't "baby room" sound wayyy cuter than "nursery?" I sure think so.) We finished painting, we put up an adorable lamp from Ikea, we got new carpet, AND we bought our baby room furniture and started assembling it all! I can't wait to show everyone pictures. But in the meantime, you'll all have to wait because I am one of these perfectionists that refuses to show people pictures of the incomplete (hence, I will never be a "proper" food blogger).

Anyways, here's this week's pregnancy log!

Week 25:
Symptoms: I threw up three days ago so I guess the morning sickness isn't completely over yet! Ha! And I'm still suffering from extreme tiredness and crazy shortness of breath! I did have a breakthrough though. I'm realizing now that the shortness of breath mainly happens when I am sitting down...so I guess I gotta be more active to avoid it!

How I'm feeling: Excited! I can't wait til the baby room is done!

Cravings: Still omelettes and olives! Ha!

Aversions: The chicken + meat aversions continue...

Anything To Report?: Nope...

Six month pregnant!! How did we get here so fast?! Time surely flies!

Week 24:
Symptoms: I haven't thrown up for a whole week! I think morning sickness has finally subsided! I'm still suffering from extreme tiredness and crazy shortness of breath though!

How I'm feeling: It's hard to breathe :(

Cravings: Still omelettes. And plain M&M's.

Aversions: The chicken + meat aversions continue...

Anything To Report?: I finally ordered some maternity shirts....My belly has been hanging out of my regular shirts! Hahaha!
